Why study this course?

  • World-leading research: The Centre for Byzantine, Ottoman and Modern Greek Studies (CBOMGS) is part of the Department of Classics, Ancient History and Archaeology, which Times Higher Education ranked among the top five Classics departments in the country for our performance in the latest Research Excellence Framework exercise.
  • Stimulating environment: CBOMGS provides a stimulating environment for cross-disciplinary research and inter-cultural dialogue. The Centre produces several world-class publications and regularly hosts international conferences and symposia.
  • Postgraduate community: The Centre has a large postgraduate community that has its own forum (Gateway to the Eastern Mediterranean or GEM) and schedule of meetings at which postgraduates present their research. Postgraduates also organise an annual international postgraduate colloquium. They participate in the weekly General Seminar of the Centre and in the Spring Symposium of Byzantine Studies.

Programme Structure:

  • Research in the Centre for Byzantine, Ottoman and Modern Greek Studies covers the east Mediterranean, the Balkans and the Middle East across a wide range of disciplines, historical periods and divergent cultural traditions.

“The transition from undergrad to postgrad can be a big step up in terms of workload and what is expected of you, but there is so much support available to you as a postgrad student, from academic writing support (if you’ve been out of education for a few years or just want a bit of extra help) to mental health and wellbeing services. The careers support is fantastic – the uni puts on employer fairs throughout the year and you have access to one on one support from the Careers Network team, who can help you develop your skills ready for your next step!”
